Halo-Halo

During my mother's visit I have introduced her to many of my favourite Filipino things: mango shakes, jeepney rides, beautiful beaches etc. But the thing that probably tops the list is Halo-Halo.

Halo-Halo is a delicious Filipino dessert - the ultimate in sugar rushes. The meaning of Halo-Halo is "mix-mix" and that's what the desert is - a mixture of all sorts of sweet goodies which combine to become a real taste sensation.

Typically Halo-Halo will have a base of shaved ice and then will have chunks of banana, mango, some red azuki beans, chunks of jelly, slices of coconut and yam pieces thrown in. A condensed milk sauce is then poured over it all and to top it off you get a scoop or two of icecream on the top.

Once you get your Halo-Halo its up to you to mix it all up – you spend the first minute smashing your spoon up and down to break up the ice and mix everything together. After that you can indulge and what an indulgence it is...MMMM!

PS. For those of you familiar with the Cat Empire's song of the same name...yes it does whirl through my head everytime I eat this wicked dessert!
